they used gimp, some people hate it. some people cant use it well. i use it a little differently. Instead of all that detail in one layer. i do multiple layers. using layers keeps it neater during production and creation. i suggest playing a little more with the opacity, it makes shading ten times faster.

oh yea...do u use the smudge tool to smooth out all the different shades?Or different layers?
