A strategic overview of the first of the independent tasks on the speaking portion of the ibt. This video was produced by David Hattem, a professor in the Program for American Language Studies (P.A.L.S) at Rutgers University in Newark, NJ. David has been teaching the speaking and listening sections of the TOEFL IBT for the past two years. http://pals.newark.rutgers.edu/

  • Should we Focus on the lecture here Coz based on those who have taken the TOEFL test they said that the Basis of high rates/score here is the Specific point s of the Lecture of the Professor

  • @optimusprime2525 I agree, focus on listening

  • oh my god, you should be self-possessed to remember these technique and collect the details! i am not sure i can handle it:(

    thanks!

  • @Vooalja Positive thinking always helps. Think positively and positive things will happen to you. Think negatively, and negative things will happen to you.

  • Two thumbs up to you for this video. . Thank you, this helped me a lot to further understand the General to Specific Integrated Task. I subsequently encountered problems in mastering this task. . God Bless! I wish to see more of your videos! xoxo~MAE AUSTRAL

  • you are awesome! with your toefl videos now i feel more secure going to the actual test! thank you :D

  • @VFVZ thanks!

  • @optimusprime2525 Focus on listening. The reading passage is only there to contextualize the listening passage. Your strategy is after you have taken notes on both passages, look at which details in the reading passage are mentioned, or related to the listening passage, then use only those details when you summarize the reading passage.

  • If any of you want to know specifically about time, as some of my students sometimes ask me, I would devote no more than 10 seconds to the intro, 20 seconds for the reading passage, and 30 seconds for the listening passage. If you have trouble doing the intro in 10 seconds or less, I would go with an intro like this:

In this set of materials the main topic is ______________. According to the reading passage...etc.,

  • I understand that my example is extremely polished and complex, and would be hard for even a native speaker to do. However, my aim is to provide you with an example that would be given a 4. With the details for the general to specific task, the problem I find with most students is they try to include every detail, and what happens is they usually go over the time. That's why I suggest provide 1 or 2 relevant details from the reading, and then focus your energy on the listening passage.

  • this answer took me 1 minute and 20 seconds just by reading it. it would take me more time when thinking organizing while speaking! is this possible for us nonnative speakers to compress details in 1 minute?

  • The Longest Paragraph is the Listening Lecture paragraph OK so it means the Graders are after the the Lecture points not the reading Thanks Sir
