Alicia's Shark Attack

On Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at approximately quarter to 5 pm, four friends went to the beach at St. Augustine expecting a day of fun in the sun. Then, it all went horribly wrong.

Alicia got bit by a shark, and we ended up waiting with her at Flagler Hospital. She's doing just fine, but it appears that the small shark bit through her Achilles tendon, and so she stayed overnight for some surgery and will return to patch up the remainder. She's a brave one, and her friends are very proud of her!

I know they had to be driving the staff crazy! I'm surprised they let her stay cuz in er it's strictly business. Their trying to take care of the patient and here's a really giggly chick with a camera.

@MsNayners24 Actually, the staff was really enthusiastic about me filming. I asked several times if I was allowed to film, and I was surprised when they told me yes--if I wasn't, or if it was making them uncomfortable, then they would have told me I couldn't. Also, I think it was helping my very scared friend feel a little more at ease during the 11 straight hours we were stuck in the hospital.

@MsNayners24 Yes, but we were away at the University, so it took her mom a long time to get there, and we stayed with Alicia until she arrived.

You can see the exact second when the painkiller and sedative kick in lol.

And they say that all you crazy college kids take drugs 24/7.

I'm glad your girlfriend was okay. That's one hell of a story to have to tell.

Update: The shark severed Alicia's Achilles tendon, and she went to the Mayo clinic in Minnesota for surgery. Her aunt works there, and helped arrange it. She had a rigid, bright green, above the knee cast for a few weeks, and then a removable below the knee cast for the rest of the summer. She was back in the ocean doing snooba before she was out of the soft cast, and she climbed a Mayan pyramid in Mexico while wearing it. She's now completely recovered except for a few fading scars of which
