I decided not to use the mute for this particular concert because of the acoustics of the particular hall and orchestra. (Though I would always use a mute in the slow movement of Tchaikovsky, no matter what.) When doing solo performances, my mute of choice is a so-called "fake Tourte" (those soft rubber violin-shaped ones).
