For a complete lesson on coin word problems, go to http://www.yourteacher.com - 1000+ online math lessons featuring a personal math teacher inside every lesson! In this lesson, students learn to solve "value" word problems, such as the following. Martin has a total of 19 nickels and dimes worth $1.65. How many of each type of coin does he have? Note that this problem requires a chart to organize the information. The chart is based on the total value formula, which states that the number of coins times the value of each coin = the total value. The chart is then used to set up the equation.

  • ok. first of all x is an expression. first.2 u dont just say x. second.i learned this in 4th grade third.I LIKE PIE XD XP XO YAYAH SUCKAZ :P

  • @kdleisten97 hes writing in cents

  • @kdleisten97 ya the value but the question dosnt ask for the value it asks for the amount he has of each coin

  • The value of a nickel is 0.05 not 5, and the value of a dime is 0.10 not 10. Wow I can't believe I just corrected a pro.

  • and i get the bad teacher -0-

  • @BloodAndRainbows13 yes you would distribute the 10 and when you do this is what you get: 5x + 10(19-x)=165

    5x+190-10x=165

    combine like terms, 5x -10x leaves you -5x

    -5x + 190=165

    subtract 190 from both sides

    -5x =-25

    divide both sides by negative 5

    x=5

  • Wouldn't you distribute the 10(19-x)? Where did the 5 even come from?
