Food Stamps for PHD Students?!

Welfare isn't something you normally associate with graduate students, but its becoming more and more common. PHD students, masters students, and even newly minted professors are using food stamps and other government services because of low pay and high debt. Ana Kasparian of the Young Turks and John Iadarola discuss this crazy development on TYT University.

Nobody expects to live like a king while studying something they're interested in, they're just studying what they find interesting so they can pursue a career in it that can at least be a living. Isn't that what America is all about? Freedom and the pursuit of happiness? Being able to find something we are interested in, and to at least be able to live off it?

One was a Barnes & Noble that wouldn't hire me since I had no recent retail experience (I am medically limited to a desk job and would have to ask for a stool once hired), and finally, one was one of the multitude of face-to-face marketing jobs that will give a first interview to any college grad, then bases whether you get to do the other two interviews based on rigid personality expectations. Get a brain.

If I could find a job, I wouldn't have entered the shelter system, idiot. I've submitted close to 1700 job applications since becoming homeless. I've had 14 interviews in that time--six with temp services, two that led to short-term freelance work, and six duds. One wanted a fluent Hebrew speaker (which I'm not, so I don't know why they called me), two web design jobs went with experience over education. One was a telemarketing job a govt program forced me to apply to even though I've lost...

I admit that I've chosen something that I know you can earn a lot of money with. But that's my choice, I find the money important too. I will however never say that humanities are useless, they are too valuable. I think the situation in Europe is very different since we don't take loans to go to university here, universities are not as expensive. And I believe that the standards are higher here, because not everyone goes to university, in America it looks like EVERYONE goes to university.
