International Mozarteum Foundation Director Ulrich Leisinger has identified two pieces by the young musical prodigy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He says there are more pieces written by the young Mozart waiting to be discovered.
The International Mozarteum Foundation performed two new Mozart compositions on Sunday (August 02).

The discoveries, an extensive concerto movement and a prelude, were found at the end of the music book that Mozarts father Leopold began to compile in 1759.

The book, Nannerls Music Book, was name for his daughter Marie Anna (Nannerl) and was used for the musical education of Wolfgang.

Ulrich Leisinger explained the importance of the music book.

[Ulrich Leisinger, Scientific Director, Mozarteum Foundation]:
"The most important is that we have testimonies for the extraordinary keyboard techniques of the young Mozart children. These pieces are extremely difficult to play and this is already something important."

The music book also contains Mozarts first compositions.

[Ulrich Leisinger, Scientific Director, Mozarteum Foundation]:
"This pieces are highly demanding and they are almost as difficult as some of the later concertos and they are particularly tricky as there is no experienced composer at work, but someone, who has high ambitions and so the pianist really has to sweat."

The Mozarteum hopes to discover more compositions in the future.

[Ulrich Leisinger, Scientific Director, Mozarteum Foundation]:
"It's quite possible that some new pieces, really new pieces also will resurface from time to time, because we know that young Mozart composed quite a number of pieces, of which we have lost traces.

The first performance of the Mozart works on Sunday were held in front of just a few guests and reporters at the Mozarteum.

The first public performance of the pieces, including the new orchestra version by Robert D. Levin, will take place during Mozart week in January 2010.

  • could they find someone with less ability to pronounce words?

  • @polymath7

I posted the first movement of his first symphony on my channel a long time ago :) I have the complete symphonies. It's fascinating how even at that age he must have been ranking with and rivalling the adult, mature composers of his time! That's what it sounds like anyway, in the early symphonies - there is no surface evidence of compositional unease, they move with his customary fluidity and grace. Enjoy!

  • Something that quite annoys me is the bloke who pronounces Mozart like "Mosart" rather than "motzart" and claims that 2 new compositions "HAS" been found.. :0

    Good news nonetheless.

  • Mozart fans will figure its belong to him in 1:22 - 1:27.. listen carefully . its 5 seconds but you will find Mozart in there.

  • I predicted this in march

  • Holy shit, this the first I'm hearing of this.

    This is Huge.

I don't suppose anyone would know where I could here a recording of the 1st symphony?

I've long been curious to hear what a symphony written by the eight-year-old Mozart would sound like.

Oddly enough, no one appears to consider it worth the trouble of performance.

Even if it's so raw as to be unlistenable, I would think historical interest alone would make it worth a hearing.

  • Anyone know who the lady is on the cello?

  • I hope this to be true and as a Mozart no. 1 fan, will be looking forward to hear them!

  • no me lo creo

  • I love the way she says MOSART.
