FirefoxLiveTrek - Oklahoma City Zoo

An entry for the Firefox Live Red Panda trek contest, based around the Oklahoma City Zoo.

Zoos have become an increasingly important component of conservation efforts, due to both their role in raising awareness for endangered and threatened species, as well as maintaining genetically diverse populations and providing a venue for critical behavioral research. Red pandas from facilities in India have been reintroduced into the wild and have bred with wild pandas.

Zoos around the country are threatened by budget shortfalls in their home communities, which can lead to increased reliance on donations, fund raisers and regular attendance. While the Oklahoma City Zoo remains successful, a handful of facilities around the country have either had to close their gates to visitors, or shut down completely.
