Taken in the Metro Twin Cities in the morning of 9/13/07 with a mobile phone out my office window. A cold front was passing thru with the low NE of Duluth. Their were higher based clouds a couple thousand feet higher in the background presenting some contrast difficulties but, the roll cloud entirely separate distinct and on it's own. This is facing South then panning to the East. I went out front (North) the it trailed off into the horizon to the ENE associated with a dying storm system that passed North of the Metro earlier. Poor video but, all I had was my cell phone and an office window.

  • Yes it was entirely detached from the rest of the leading edge of the storm/gust front and was rolling just not quite as tubular as most roll clouds. Very similar to a shelf cloud (both arcus clouds) just not as common(I have seen TONS of shelf clouds, very few roll clouds). They do tend to form often on shorelines due to the sea breezes while this was created by the downdraft of an approaching thunderstorm.
