This lecture examines the crucial ideological divide between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson: their differing visions of national life, economic priorities, views on the rich and the poor, and foreign policy. We look beyond party positions and the 1790s to antithetical views of mankind, the role of government, and the proper vision of what America should be.

    Where are your sources?

Gilded Age America: Tariffs ranged from 25% to 49% and we built dozens of railroads.

Post War America: Interstate Highway, NASA, Hill Burton Health, your talking to me via NASA Space chips and the Arpanet

  • @Salvysahagun Sources?

  • @danocatster

Your should look into the Trade policy of the American Gilded Age

And the fiscal policies of Post War America.

Hamilton is in the details. Sorry Free market Capitalism has NOTHING to do with American history

  • @Salvysahagun Which yielded nothing that wasn't offset by Hamiltonian failure. Note that we are in some serious trouble regarding the sustainability of our corporatist economy.

  • @danocatster

See American Economic History, Hamiltonian Success.

  • @Salvysahagun See Authors Forum: Hamilton's Curse | Thomas J. DiLorenzo

  • @Salvysahagun Again, true to some extent, but doesn't address Jefferson's understanding of money...which was profound. No room here to deal with Hamilton's legacy.

  • @danocatster

Sadly Hamilton's ideas are what built America into an economic Super Power. NOT Jefferson

If you seek Hamilton's monument, look around. You are living in it. We honor Jefferson, but live in Hamilton's country, a mighty industrial nation with a strong central government

    - George Will

  • @Salvysahagun No kidding...what does that have to do with his understanding of money?

    Just one example:

“The trifling economy of paper, as a cheaper medium, or its convenience for transmission, weighs nothing in opposition to the advantages of the precious metals… it [paper money] is liable to be abused, has been, is, and forever will be abused, in every country in which it is permitted.” ~Letter to John W. Eppes, 1813

  • @danocatster

Jefferson didn't fire a single shot in the ENTIRE Revolution
