Yeh I guess it's all to do with fate and chance. Some things you can change, some things are just plain written.

Once the owl shaman's people have escaped then I think you then become the Wanderer being dragged to the pool.

You can attack the shaman and people, but they always escape. It's great controlling him though. You should totally finish the game to experience it for yourself.

It's to tie SotC in with Ico. SotC is a prequel and fills in some back story to Ico, kind of.
