Rob Henley of ioSelect presented the training session "Deploying Wireless Technologies in Industrial Environments" at ISA San Diego Section's I/C Expo09 annual Expo and Technical Training Event on August 6, 2009. Websites: www.icexpo09.com, www.isasd.com.

This fast-paced presentation was intended as a 'primer', providing the audience with a practical working knowledge of the wireless terminology, landscape, and the industrial options available today, allowing users an opportunity to make better informed decisions.

Applying and installing wireless products in an industrial environment, requires more thought and planning than consumer applications. This presentation provided the audience with an overview of the available technologies, current application successes, and future technology directions. We will discuss the growth and evolution of radio transmission technologies (narrowband, spread spectrum, cellular, satellite) in the industrial environments, and review the 'competing' protocol standards including 802.x (Bluetooth, ZigBee, WiFi, WiMax), GSM, 3G, and various proprietary protocols . The goals and initiatives of the various industrial wireless "standards" consortiums (including ISA's SP-100 committee, WirelessHART and WINA) were also be touched on.

Rob Henley is the president & founder of ioSelect Incorporated, a San Diego-based company focused on the development and implementation of industrial connectivity products & solutions (both wired and wireless) for the process control, factory automation, and test & measurement markets. Rob is an industry veteran, with more than 30 years in the Instrumentation & Automation business, most of this time with Action Instruments (a division of Invensys) where he held multiple operations, engineering and marketing roles ending as General Manager before deciding to leave to pursue his connectivity 'vision' and form his current company.
