Né à Montréal le 20 mai 1940, Eddy Palchak a grandi dans le quartier Ahuntsic où il a remporté le championnat des pointeurs aux niveaux bantam et midget, avant d'amasser 35 buts et 30 aides à sa dernière saison chez les juvéniles. À 19 ans, Palchak était instructeur de l'équipe Junior B de Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, sous la supervision de Phil Wimmer des Canadiens, tout en fréquentant le Collège Loyola et c'est par un heureux hasard qu'il fut appelé à prendre la relève du préposé à l'équipement des Canadiens Juniors pendant la Coupe Memorial, amorçant du même coup ce qui allait être une fructueuse carrière.

C'est en 1966-1967, après une saison d'apprentissage chez les Canadiens Juniors, qu'il se joignait au grand club dans le rôle d'adjoint à Larry Aubut, avant d'accéder au titre de gérant de l'équipement au début des années 1980. Au cours de sa carrière avec les Canadiens, Palchak a gravé son nom sur la coupe Stanley à dix reprises, ce qui constitue un record absolu dans la LNH pour un membre du personnel de soutien. En 1998, on reconnaissait sa contribution alors qu'il était intronisé au Panthéon de l'Association des gérants d'équipement au hockey professionnel (PHATS).


Born in Montreal on May 20, 1940, Eddy Palchak grew up in Ahuntsic where he won scoring titles at the bantam and midget levels. In his final year of competitive hockey he led the Montreal Juvenile Hockey League with 35 goals and 30 helpers. At 19, he coached the NDG Junior B team under the supervision of the Canadiens Phil Wimmer, while attending Loyola College. In the mid-1960s, he attended the Memorial Cup tournament in Toronto, where the Junior Canadiens were battling the Marlboros and when the team's trainer came up with a sudden illness, he filled in and his career was under way.

In 1966-67, after a year of learning the trade with the Junior Canadiens, his hard work and dedication earned him to join the Canadiens as assistant to veteran trainer Larry Aubut. Throughout his 31-year career with the Canadiens, Palchak etched his name on the Stanley Cup 10 times, an NHL record for a member of the support staff in NHL history. In 1998, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Professional Hockey Athletic Trainers Society (P.H.A.T.S.) for his contribution to the game.
