The NHIF are the other initials that remain on the headlines following the health care body's recent move to increase member contribution rates. A remark by Medical services minister Anyang Nyongo about having lunch at a five star hotel is however the latest centre of an exchange between the minister and COTU secretary general Francis Atwoli. Atwoli has termed the comments made by Medical Service Minister careless and ignorant adding that the 2,500 shilling lunch that he compared to the NHIF contribution he was expected to pay was the equivalent of a month's salary for many people living in the slums. Gladys Mutiso reports.

  • @hafidy Governments responsibility does not include health. It includes only security. We are not socialists.

  • I will say this, Kenya is too poor to afford a public health system. The public health systems in the west are collapsing due to health debt, how are we going to pay for our infrastructure development if we start sinking money into welfare?

We need to sink money into food security and commerce first

  • Atwoli and Anyang are both two shallow ends of the same pool...show offs! The issue at hand needs to be handled well to work..not public chest thumping!

  • Atwoli makes over Kshs 1 million a month in salary. He make as much, if no more, as the MPS. He should not be complaining about Kshs 66 a day. Now, if he has evidence that the money in NHIF funds are being used for shady deals, then he needs to table that.

  • Atwoli is more of a villager that a Trade Unionist. Little education is bad. Healthcare for all Kenyans is worth additional sacrifice from the employed to help insure all citizens. Those who have jobs have a duty to give back to the general society who shoulder the cost of the salaries they earn regardless of whether they are in public or private sector.

  • jaluo jinga kabisa !@#$%^!!!

  • Nyong'o is a fat cat and he surely doesn't understand the poor people. Most Kenyans do not even take lunch since they earn peanuts. If only he can understand what is ugali madodo, chapati chafuwa/Ndunga, Ndazi surwa or just Getheri ya grogon he would have checked his wording!

  • Nyongo was speaking of people earning more than 100,000 coz they theones who would pay 66/day. Obviously, he wasn't talkin about poor people. He's right, those who make 100,000 shouldn't complain too much. Also, yes its govas responsibility to provide health insurance for all now, but how will gova do it without tax revenue?

  • Atwoli amedinya point hapo!

  • Hey Mr, nyongo you are paying 2500ksh for lunch coz you are a big fish...forgetting that majority of kenyans live below the poverty line and they use 2500ksh or even less for there monthly upkeep before uttering such statements familiarize yourself with the situation on the ground..
