This is a clip from my lecture/concert for the West Houston SDA Church on May 11, 2007. It is taken from the "house video" made by that church. This clip features most of Lamentations 1:1-2, as recorded on LA MUSIQUE DE LA BIBLE REVELEE (Harmonia Mundi France). A ear-catching "theme" from verse 1 carried over into both Sephardic-Oriental synagogue chant and the Gregorian chant for Maundy Thursday. Indeed, long before S. Haik-Vantoura did her work, A.Z. Idelsohn documented that this very theme was a repeating motif in the Maundy Thursday chant of Lamentations. This illustrates that Jewish pilgrims to the Second Temple picked up some of the more striking motives of the professional liturgy and passed them on in the local communities as folk tunes (although these folk tunes have greatly degenerated since).
