Members of the Spring Lake Park school community this week welcomed Holocaust survivor Peter Fischl, age 79, to the high school Performing Arts Center. Fischl spoke for an hour about his life experience in Hungary and later in the United States. A native of Budapest, Fischl was given refuge with other Jewish children in a Hungarian school during the Holocaust. He moved to the United States at age 27. He has a sister, age 81, also living in the U.S. They lost their father during the Holocaust; he was taken by Nazis and they never saw him again. During his presentation at the high school this week, Fischl read from a poem that he has published, which focused on a photograph of a Polish boy. Fischl's visit was sponsored by Sam's Club of Fridley and by the Spring Lake Park Panther Foundation. Leading the welcome for Fischl was eighth-grade student Natasha Powell, who had been in contact with him for a school project last year. Powell spoke about what sparked her school project and Fischl's appearance.
