A brief tutorial of how I pack my tarantulas safely for shipping. Always use appropriate size container for tarantula being shipped. Line bottom, sides and top with tissue, napkin or similar. You want to mimic a burrow for the tarantula so it feels at home and also the tissue helps protect the tarantula during shipment. After adding tissue linning, moisten slightly to help keep tarantula hydrated during its trip.
Once you coax the tarantula into the container, cover with cap and place in insulated box with heat or cold pack. depending on season along with packing material to keep tarantula safe and stable during transit. This is how I pack, with great success.

how long can a T live in the pill bottle when being shipped? I asked cause Im having one sent to me from California to NYC...will it survive?!?!?
doublejayjones 6 months ago
@doublejayjones From CA to NYC shouldn't be a problem as long as your shipper knows what there doing as far as packing. All depends on if your having it sent Priority 2-3 day or Express overnight. I used to ship slings all the time year round all over the country, no problems. Had some out in the mail for 4-5 days and they survived fine. If your using a reputable dealer, should be fine.

so the slings can breath still with the paper towel cork? Because looks like I'll be shipping G. Rosea slings out in another month or so. Two egg sacs!

@DawgcityClev Yes, they breathe just fine. I use to have slings out for 4-5 days, never lost any. It's best to wait till your slings are at least 2nd to 3rd instar before shipping. I shipped all my slings using the straw method. That way you can ship many at once for less money and they do well in the straw. No tissue needed except to plug each end. May save you loads of time packing and shipping.

@moose9900 excellent. one last question. Are you counting from egg to eggs with legs as 1st instar or counting from eggs with legs to next molt as 1st instar?
DawgcityClev 1 year ago
@DawgcityClev I think eggs with legs is first instar. From my experience, when they molt into second instar, they start webbing and eating and look like little tarantulas. First instar there living off there egg yolk, don't web, eat or climb very well. All this could vary from species to species. You don't need to separate them until they are second instar after which they may/will start to cannibalize each other.
