  • Infuriating that we can't fund the armed forces but we can find the cash for yet another multi billion bank bail out .

  • A Royal navy without capital ships, hard to show the flag with submarines, this is so wrong

  • To the suprise of abolutely no one the decision to retire the Ark and her Harriers early has already been shown up for the obvious folly it was, reports on our intervention in Libya have shown keeping the carrier and its air wing would of worked out cheaper than flyingTyphoons from Sicily,if and when we have a pop at Syria the decision is going to look even more ridiculous .

  • And so the Invincibles pass into a proud history.

I fear for t he future of the RN , with an idiot in charge od the Tories, another in charge of the Labour party and the less said about the Libs the better.

  • @beastatlay I could last year but even if you can not find that article you must have found reports of the problems, delays, miss fires etc.I agree that navweps is bias but even so it had nothing bad to say about the 155mm.

  • @beastatlay This was in the news for some time when I was aboard HMS Dauntless last year.

  • @elswick1542

I already tried Google. I can find no mention of a select committee report which mentions SM-3.

I'm afraid you're wrong again on the T45s. All Phalanx have been given a "zero-life" overhaul and upgraded to Block 1B. It was in Navy News a couple of months ago.

Navweaps is a load of utter shite. Their editorial agenda is to praise and boost the USN above all others, regardless of time period. Tony diGiulian in particular has a dismissive attitude toward British ships.

  • @beastatlay Try a google search.

German 155mm was just a SP gun turret fitted to a ship Brit gun was a Naval gun.

Navweaps site has most of this info.

Vulcan guns fitted to T-45 were removed from T-42,s very old 80,s models.

  • @elswick1542

You're mistaken - Aster/Sea Viper has been fired by both the French and the Royal Navy, on many occasions in the case of the former. As for the 155mm "Medium Gun" being cancelled, thank Christ for that. The Germans couldn't get their version to work, and neither could we. And the Phalanx that people said would never be to T45 fitted has been.

"Billions to spare"? Which select committee report was this?

  • @farmerned6 IIR the Sea Eagle equipped Bucs had bomb bay tanks but the idea goes back to the 60,s load of info and pics in an old book I have called project cancelled.

155mm cancelled late 2010 last round of defence cuts no explanation offered so its the 4.5 for the forseable.

  • @elswick1542 Why has 155mm been cancelled? common ammo makes sense, there cant be much advantage in keeping 4.5 inch, sea viper has been fired, its multiple Targeting that's not working, why did they go with viper anyway?

I think all bucc's could have fuel tanks fitted into the bomb bay, buddy fuel or extra endurance, it would have been too heavy for a fighter (and rolling probs high level) could have saved a packet developing Tornados and kept them for long range/low level bombing
