The first half of this video is a slideshow of photos and video of friends and family in Apuk Padoc, S. Sudan, the second half illustrates a community in Mozambique receiving the well technology we will be bringing to Apuk Padoc this fall. The photos are taken by Augustino Ting Mayai and his cousin Gabriel Bai Geng, who came to the U.S. in 2001 after more than ten years living as "Lost Boys."
The Lost Boys, now known in the U.S. through documentary films and books, fled S. Sudan as children in the wake of the first Sudanese government-led mass murder of black Christians. After years at a refugee camp in Kenya, several thousand were brought to the U.S., where they have had the opportunity to pursue education and work.
August is now working on his PhD in demography and his cousin Gabriel Bai Geng is finishing his Bachelor's in accounting. The two returned home in 2006, when these pictures were taken. They began a non-profit to help their village soon after that, and have returned every year since then as they and their American friends work to build up the Machara Miracle Network. We're raising funds now to install wells in the village this fall.
