DM&IR empty train is running weat with trackage rights on the CN ex-DWP railroad at Virgina, MN. Waiting in the siding is a west bound CN train with the second unit being one of the few remaining DWP units. http://www.railpictures.net/members/photostats.php?userid=1679 http://www.rail-videos.net/members/videostats.php?userid=1434

  • Are those SD38 or SD40 What is the difference between those

  • DM&IR's are SD38. They are pretty much the same car body as the SD40. The SD38 is non-turbo charged, the SD40 has a turbo, and more HP. The SD38 has two cooling fans on the rear, the SD40 has three. There is a difference in the roof line after the cab for the air filters. Hope this helps out a little. Thanks for looking. Jackmp294

  • The second unit looks like an SD40-2T (it has the tunnel motor lower grill work). I know DMIR has at least a couple SD40's which I have seen when the ships I worked on would sail into Duluth and Two Harbors.

  • @roundthirteen , it is a SD40-2T body, but has been rebuilt as a SD40-3. Also, the DM&IR didn't own any SD40's. They did have the SD38, which kinda resembled an SD40. The SD38 has 2 rear rad fans, different air filter system, and non-turbo charged to name a few differences from the 3 rad fans, and turbo charged SD40 model. I'm sure others will chime in on the differences, but that is a few.

  • @1jackdk love the horns

  • The sure do sound great John. Thanks for watching. Jack...

  • THE best chord of any North American train horn. Ever. This was a horn that actuall made a "sound" instead of just making "noise".

The old cast P-5 & the S5-T are both kings in the world of air horns.

  • at 00:26, i like to sit under that bridge. it's loud and shaky when trains go through with horn and engines.

  • RIP D&MIR CN will never do this railroad justice

  • Sounds like a distant K5LLA.

  • That brings back memories of the Rock Island sound for me. Unfortunately the decibels of that horn is not loud enough for todays regulations.

  • About 95% of all the Rock Island motors were nothing but that ((HORN!)) The sound of a great memory! :-D 30 YEARS of a memory brought back.

  • Beautiful horns and video!

  • Sounds like a baby and a cat glued together that just got punted through a football goal.

Meh, I can't lie. Amazing sounding horns!

  • Makes me homesick, gotta love Virginia / Mt. Iron area, and you got a Peg SD40 too!

  • The DM&IR ran SD38's which were GP38's on SD40 frames. I'm not too sure why it's done like this as that's all my dad's friend who works at the Keenan yard told him. Sadly now a days there are only 2 DMIR engines in the original colors. One still in revenue service with CN and the other sitting safely with the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. Some of the old DMIR units have been repainted into CN colors and can be picked out by the DMIR marking under the road number on the sides.

  • The Missabe & Peg in Virginia Great Video!

  • You can never say "for sure," but SD40's have the Flexicoil trucks while the SD38's have the HTC trucks.
