Political longevity is easy. You find what the electorate's hot buttons are: rascism, boat people, whatever . . and then press them. It works, and you can be in power for years and do very well out of it personally. Menzies made the model, and Howard replayed it. Whether real understanding of the issues or their results by the public, or whether the country is any better off at the end of it is irrelevant. You have been there a long time. A la Menzies, a la Howard.
