On Veterans Day, Vets of Iraq and Afghanistan and their supporters Face Trial for Antiwar Protest
Today, on Veterans Day, we turn to the voices of veterans ... Ten antiwar veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and five civilians pleaded not guilty Monday to charges of disorderly conduct at a protest last month outside the final presidential debate. We speak to IVAW member Sgt. Matthis Chiroux, who refused an Iraq deployment after fighting in Afghanistan.
Sgt. Matthis Chiroux
Served in the Army for five years and refused to deploy to Iraq earlier this year after watching the Winter Soldier testimony. Helped organize the protest outside Hofstra University and was among the fifteen who were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. He is also a member Iraq Veterans Against the War.
Its Veterans Day. Fifteen antiwar veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and their supporters pled not guilty on Monday to charges of disorderly conduct. The Hempstead 15, as theyre now known, were arrested last month at an Iraq Veterans Against the War demonstration outside the final presidential debate at Hofstra University here in New York. When they attempted to cross the police line to enter the university and ask the candidates a question about war, the police charged the crowd with horses. Fifteen veterans were arrested. One of them, Nick Morgan, was trampled and brought to the local hospital with a broken cheekbone.
@modokid... I have the highest respect for people who have served in our military and for our veterans. I don't believe our veterans are treated fairly in our country by the government. No matter my beliefs about any war I support our troops. I adopt a soldier for each deployment because it's the least I can do. I'm sorry that I came off as being disrespectful. There's no greater sacrifice than serving in the military.

@modokid...Police are given orders just as veterans were when they were on active duty. In the military especially you follow those orders. The police, if they only kept people from crossing the line were following their orders. I too have had a line of family members who have and who are serving n the military. I never met my Uncle because his plane was shot down in WWII. Currently have a brother who is a marine. Had a cousin who flew F-14's in Iraqi Operation Freedom.

@modockid Having worked in the local media for several years I know to what extent police and social security will go to to protect a President or Presidential candidates. We had to arrive 4 hours early. We were searched. Dogs sniffed all of gear and trucks. If the police did indeed pull protesters off of the sidewalk then they were wrong. If protesters tried to cross a police line then I believe the protesters are in the wrong.

@modokid.... When I wrote that vets shouldn't try to cross police lines I was responding to what the narrator said at the beginning of her report. She claimed that the protesters tried to cross the police line. I must have been in a really piss ass mood to call any vet a dumb ass and for that I apologize. I still believe that Vets need to follow laws just like everybody else. I certainly am all for peaceful protesting...as you said it is a right that you fought for , for people like me..

I support all vets to the fullest. But vets need to follow the laws as well as all other citizens.

That's what you get dumb asses for trying to cross a police line! You can assemble peacefully as long as you stay where you probably have a permit for. Police have a duty to protect Presidental canditates. Did you like it when Iraqi's crossed lines into your territory???
