Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States. There is no safe level of smoking and each cigarette you smoke damages your lungs, your blood vessels, and cells throughout your body. Even occasional smoking is harmful, and the best option for any smoker is to quit completely. Encourage your mom to quit smoking, so she can live a longer, healthier life. Free help to quit smoking is available by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW or visiting online at smokefree.gov.

Is smoking addictive because the nicotine puts major changes on your cerebral cortex?

Nicotine affects many parts of the brain. It travels through the bloodstream to the brain, where it activates reward pathways--the brain circuits that control feelings of pleasure. Nicotine does this by increasing levels of a chemical called dopamine. Brain changes from nicotine can cause addiction (compulsive drug use). When an addicted user quits, he or she can have withdrawal symptoms like irritability, sleep problems, and tobacco cravings. Treatments can help smokers manage these symptoms.

Man: Crouch don't bend over. You don't want to lose the food in your stomach.
Eww gross! Does he mean while you are eating or after you are done?

There is a “valve cover” in the throat called the epiglottis. When you swallow, it covers the opening to your trachea to prevent food or liquid from getting into your lungs. When the larynx is removed, this valve cover that protects the trachea is also removed. An opening called a stoma is made in the throat and a person takes in air through that opening. The tube inserted in the stoma places a seal over that area so that material from the mouth or stomach does not get into the trachea and lungs

Smokers aren't stupid. They should all know the effects by now but they choose to smoke anyways.
Better a smoker than a drunk driver.

I am appalled that CDC would show something as grotesque as a stoma on television.

Before I watched this video, I didn't smoke, but I watched people do it. I thought to myself, "Maybe it won't be so bad to smoke every once in a while". Then, before I even picked up a cigarette, I watched this video. It showed me the reality of what will happen to me if I put that cigarette to my mouth and lit it. I then searched my whole house for any packs of cigarettes, crushed them, and threw them away. Thank you, CDC. Thank you so much for this life-saving video.

I don't believe that a smoker 'chooses' because from experience i feel that there is no choice but the craving for the rush...
All these anti-smoking commercials are rational, and i understand the dangers very well, i even think about them sometimes when i smoke -- but still i smoke.

It's because cigarettes make THEM money. You've seen how expensive they are and how easily people get addicted to them. Manufacturers WANT you to get addicted to cigarettes because they can get hundreds to thousands of dollars out of ONE person.
