Barb DiGi gets so upset and angry about this so-called deaf education program in University of Southern Mississippi (USM) that she identifies as one of the problematic teacher preparatory programs. The department in USM is called Hearing and Speech Science and the course syllabi includes a very few ASL courses (none related to deaf culture and bilingual instruction) but plenty of clinically related courses in deaf education. This program reflects audism! Scary? There's more!

I'm a retired teacher of the deaf who got his degree from the Spec Ed Dept at University of Tennessee in deaf ed. I think I had a good program. The USM program seems to be set up to train audiologists and speech therapists, not deaf educators. That's why it is titled "Hearing and Speech Science," appropriately. The university only has space for three ASL courses; the students are expected to gain competncy after the basic courses through practice and experience conversing with the deaf.
WoW...you're right, it is JOKE..sad and a shame...obviously people who approved the courses are clueless... I wonder if anything has changed or improve since then? I think not, i found the website and see no change..if you look at their videos, If I'm looking at the same place you did, these videos are focused and emphasized on Oral only approach...interesting ...so seems like these Deaf Ed programs are for Oral schools only?! Why are some so against ASL?! Why?! Makes no sense.. sigh..
I'm a educatin major who wants to go into deaf education, now i've met some deaf people through my life some have been great friends. I don't want to be one of those teachers who as has been said don't know the culture. Right now i'm learning sign on my own and don't know much. I want to get involved in the culture and community but don't know how to go about it. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.
I work in a signing school for the Deaf in the UK. We have the same problem, that many teachers can't sign well enough, although there are notable exceptions. Why become a ToD if you can't usr the language?! Interesting to see how much of your ASL I could understand!
cont. I too, only had 3 ASL courses and no bi-bi or culture classes. Sad! I am considering going to Gallaudet this summer just to take "authentic" ASL courses. People, without knowing Deaf you will never be able to teach it. I see so many coworkers who teach deaf kids and those kids are the only deaf they know. LMK, how I can help. We need a change.
I went to a school in IL and thought I had a fabulous ed. in deaf ed, until I began working with deaf hs. students. I have been a HI teacher for the past 9yrs, and it wasn't til this past year, being around deaf people and exp. their culture, that I really had a true knowledge of what's important.
