@skerryamp vanguard used the unreal engine. you can thank tim sweeney for the tech you see in this vid.
brad's what screwed that game up more than anything else. if anything, sony saved that game. sony bought that game like what, 2 months before launch? what you saw at launch falls squarely on the shoulders of brad's lack of leadership.
sony's the company that hung in there and fixed everything.
they screwed up with the nge. a lot of people hold that against them. but not this.

Actually, Vanguard had a LOT of appeal to a large number of gamers. The incredibly lack of quality, frequent crashes and disintegration of Brad leading up to the take over by Sony is what killed it for most.
As for Vanguard not ever being anything ... just wait, what do you think EQ3 is going to be using as a base/engine etc. Sony doesn't buy up game tech & companies just because they think it is fun.
-
This would have made a great game had SOE not taken over and completely destroyed the graphics. Since when does taking steps backwards make a game better? lol Vanguard will never be what it was that first year. It won't ever be anything anymore. Damn shame.

I think you are taking this argument a bit far in the wrong direction. I said that Vanguard does not have a lot of appeal, and generally I meant that it didn't appeal to the majority of gamers, and it doesn't. I am not bashing the game, I am not saying WoW or similar mmo's are perfect, and I am not claiming other mmo's to be more social.
Not every game has random match ups like WoW. Still have to find people to fill the spots for an instanced dungeon, which is the same principle.
-
@argottobob I've played MMOs for a good 12 years, and those that introduce instancing become less and less social. WoW is probably the most anti social MMO out there. The quest based leveling rewards solo players and encourages people to play alone, and only group for group required steps. And when they group, there's no talking.
And instances, as you said, lets people who already know eachother play together. I met most of my MMO friends in dungeons. Can't do that now with instances.
-
Entitled to your own opinion, but you can look at the popular mmo's out there and see what the majority of people like and want. I honestly don't see how instances promote anti social behavior. It merely lets you are your friends/group members complete a dungeon/raid uninterrupted.
I agree that Vanguard is a great mmo, but it has many things that drag it down from being anywhere near the best. Quite a few other games have far more PvE content.
-
@argottobob MMORPGs got on for years without instances. Instances promotes anti social behavior. The world of Vanguard is large enough that even with a server full to the top I doubt it'd have crowded any dungeons. And if I wanted a game where I played by myself with a few people.. I'd play Diablo, not an MMO.
The lack of interest in this game is directly derived from SoE trying to kill it so it won't steal subs away from EverQuest. The game itself is probably the best PvE game on the market
-
All subjective; what I said is obviously subjective. However... the lack of interest for this game should speak for itself. The reason I feel not having instances was a mistake, is because you wouldn't have an area all to yourself as a group. Imagine if this game had become massive with millions of players, how would guilds coordinate raids?
So I completely disagree with you saying that instances are the 'lazy' way out. It is the other way around.
-
@argottobob How the fuck is not having instances a mistake? Instances are just for lazy developers. And they had TONS of group content.
-
It wouldn't for the same reason age of conan didn't (aside from bugs). The majority of people out there who can run WoW with no problems on their PC wouldn't even be able to handle this game on low. And lets face it, this game in low video settings loses a lot of appeal.
I played this for about 3 months and felt the classes were pretty fun, but no instances, no decent group content.... They made a lot of mistakes, sadly.
omfg what is up with this MUSIC?
