The Jeff Warren Johnston Band performs their classic-sounding, country songs at popular music venues in Austin, Texas. The mission of the JWJ Band is to please listeners longing for that "real" country music sound in the vein of traditional artists such as Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, David Allan Coe, Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Johnny Cash, while simultaneously paving new country roads. This particular sad country waltz is inspired by the traditional image of the lonesome cowboy, drunk and tore up over his life regrets and the tragic loss of his loved ones. The romantic flair of the rodeo and unsung western heros such as bull-riders seemed too obvious to overlook. Thank God for artists like Willie Nelson who sang "My Heros Have Always Been Cowboys" and "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys." Dear KVET: More country waltzes, please!

The JWJ Band highly recommends: The Marshall Ford Swing Band, the Atomic Duo, the Love Leighs, Roky Erickson, 13th Floor Elevators, Jack Wilson, Raina Rose, Terri Hendrix, Corrina's Dreamland Band, Guy Forsyth, Milk Drive, Sick's Pack, The Belleville Outfit, Junior Brown, Dale Watson, Robert Earl Keen, and the Bad Livers

LYRICS:

I woke up with the shakes, shoulda put on the brakes
But it's not them old tremens again
I was ridin' that bull like a damn country fool
From ten until I don't know when
All my friends ask me why I continue to ride
When my legs are too crooked to stand
Well I'm not on my feet when I'm in the hot seat
And my hand still abides by command

Chorus:
I'll be blazin' through hell at the crack of the bell
And every eight seconds take ten
It's the glistenin' glamour, the crash of the hammer
That makes my heart clamour again

I decided one night not to give up this fight
Cause I must do what's right by a man
I was in the short go when a slick belly roll
Bucked me from here to Japan
When my neck hit the ground as the buzzer did sound
I knew I was finished for good
But I'd rather go down like a damn rodeo clown
Than a coward who dies like he should

Chorus

All that's left of my life since the death of my wife
And my kids have outgrown my demands
Is one ride with El Toro to that fateful end burrow
The doorway to my Promised Land

Chorus

(C) 2009 Jeff Warren Johnston
