Released in 2004 on Definitive Jux.

MURS is a rapper from L.A. and he's been making music since 1993. He had to fly to North Carolina to hook up with DJ/Producer 9th wonder of Little brother to record this album. It's his 3rd solo album of his career. He calls his style "sitcom rap".

This album actually has quite a bit of hype on the internet. People are saying it's a classic and comparing it to Nas's "Illmatic". While it is a decent album, it's not nearly on the same level as "Illmatic". That's just crazy talk.

The beats are alright. 9th Wonder likes to sample 70's soul and funk a lot. He uses quite a few vocal samples as well. There are instances where they really click with MURS's delivery, but for the most part they are just good, not great.

MURS rap is as good as it ever was. He still rapping with a blend of frankness and humor. He'll rap about his lack of sexual exploits, what happens when does get some, makes fun of thugs and gangstas, life on the streets of L.A., his friends getting shot and so on. He's a very clever rapper and it's usually entertaining to hear what he has to say. He has a self deprecating sense of humor and you can detect some level of honesty in his rap.

While not a groundbreaking album in any sense of the word, it is still a fairly decent listen. No tough guy posturing, lots of sex talk, some violence and lots of funny stories about his life. One song was even made into a movie. The beats don't really get a chance to get tiresome because the album is so short, but they probably would have if the album was any longer. The shortness is probably a good thing because it saves the album from having any filler.

While I do enjoy this album, it's not one of my favorite all time hip hop albums. Doesn't really need the amount of internet hype it has.

  • lol illmatic IS WAY BETTER THAN THIS...

but murs is nasty... that song about him talking bout how he cant get girls is really good

  • nigga u noe too much

  • I just picked this up on iTunes yesterday . I bought it only because it's Murs and the title is 3:16 witch in the Bible is John 3:16 "for god so love the world ,that he gave his only begotten Son ,that whoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." I'm half way done and it's nothing like the title Leads you to believe. It's good! But I thought maybe it was like Killah Priest or something with spiritual meaning.

  • Idk, I thought this album was fantastic :D

  • 666 SUPERSTAR! yaaaaay he's a superstar!!! yaaaaay suuuuperstaaaaar!

i don't like murs very much. i think his flow is awkward and i can't stand 9th wonder. he's always been a wannabe jd to me. i've never gotten into any of his beats. excellent review as usual!

  • Wow. You must have some collection of CDs! Do you download any music at all, like ever? lol

  • I hate hip hop, I don't listen to it at all. All I see are idiots rapping about shit, but that's just my opinion.
