As part of the "Long Remembered" downtown walking tours offered by the National Park Service at Gettysburg, Ranger Chuck Teague told his audience about William Johnson - one of Abraham Lincoln's free African American valets who accompanied him to Gettysburg in November 1863. Only a few weeks later, Johnson succumbed to smallpox and on his grave was etched "William Johnson - Citizen." Through such words, one can see how the Civil War was transformed into a conflict to reshape citizenship, equality, and freedom. These were only a few of the many themes Lincoln embraced in his Gettysburg Address. Visit www.nps.gov/gett to learn more of the park's many free tours.
