A couple of years ago the people on a web form call YakYak all clubbed together to but Jeff Minter a pristine Tempest arcade machine. It was a surprise and this is the video of it being delivered to Yak central :)

  • Jeff Minter....... LEGEND!!!

  • Of all the coin-op video games, Tempest was my absolute all-time favorite. Simple yet challenging.

  • Fantastic! Tempest is the only arcade game I was any good at as a teenager. There used to be a little arcade above the CB radio shop in my home town, it had Defender, Battlezone, Gorf and Tempest. Happy days!

  • @theatarijaguar Yup. They were baking at the end of the video, Minter's brain is so burnt on the shit, he hasn't been able to come up with a good game in years.

  • Is that a proper vector monitor inside of that machine or was there a raster monitor installed (with a converter ?)

I sure hope not, but the picture is so steady on this video, usually the vector games give a flickering picture on videos (at least with my camera).

By the way Jeff if you read this, why not write Tempest II for the original arcade hardware ? Would be a blast ! :D

  • Oh, on top of that - apparantly, Jeff _did_ once before have a Tempest cab but had to get rid of it for some reason..

  • Because they're damn hard to find. In fact, it seems that this one was assembled from several different sources - you can hear Jeff mention in the video that "he heard about Tempest cocktails coming in, and he spoke to Archer" (that's Archer MacLean, the International Karate guy, who also restores arcade machines), so maybe the board in it is from a cocktail and it's a restored cabinet?

  • The mini can has a left handed fire button. Dont know id it was added or came that way

  • Do you have a left-handed version, because I could never play this properly...

  • I actually now have 3. A regular size one an all in 1 and a mini cab.
