@dgarrat Besides, they could NEVER get away with officially localizing the early MegaTen games over here. I mean the last boss of #2 is YHVH! As in THE Big Guy Upstairs. The Right would hit the roof!

he cool

mothman...

@bajan13k They all copied Ultraseven from the 60's

Actually neither is the bases for the other. Foreign cultures are their bases.
Why must so many people try to make out anything baring even the most remote resemblance to something else as a copy?
The concepts are very simple and neither Pokemon nor Shin Megami Tensei were the first to use them.
At least this isn't as bad as when I see people trying to say one game copied the other because they are in the same genre... cuz Halo was obviously the first FPS ever <_ <... Seriously people. Stop

@Kageryushin excellent point. there are many good developers ignored.@MysticArksRevenge but also, megaten itself was a problem in the days when people in america cared about mortal kombat. i mean, the fact that you could go out against GOD whilst summoming demons like beelzebub isn't exactly a good thing amongst the suburban culture. the reason pokemon became popular was because it was accessible, not like megaten with its penis demons, blasphemy, and (in the first smt) interface no-nos.

I am a Nintento fan and I know your logic is horribly flawed. Popularity =/= quality. That is a logical fallacy, you know.

@Hardman5509 Check again. Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei for the Famicom was released in 1987. About 5 years before Dragon Quest V.

@MysticArksRevenge uh, don't forget that atlus is a niche developer. you're lucky you get shit. translating costs a lot of money, and for a piddly small amount of money compared to FF and zelda. why does Nintendo get all the credit for their franchises? because theirs is the greatest ever made. the work. they're FUN. they're games. a game is supposed to be entertaining, and nintendo makes the best entertainment. simple formula.

But Dragon Quest V came even out even earlier...
pokemon copied megaten, apparently... for sure, megaten series came out first.

IT IS NOW BAHAHAHAHAHA
But seriously. Regardless of what most people try to say, MegaTen was the basis for Pokemon. Hell, you could make a (terrible, and I'd probably be sad if you did) case for Digimon copying MegaTen, and Pokemon copying Digimon. It's just silly. Either way, if MegaTen wasn't popular in the US, then Atlus wouldn't publish it here. They're a niche developer; they can't afford to waste money like that, after all.
