There are an estimated half a million street children in Egypt. Many of them are in precarious situation and face violence on the streets. This video short looks at the lives of 10-year-old Sayyida, who's been living rough in Cairo for at least two years, and single mother Fatma. While they can go to a drop-in centre to get food in the daytime, they face an array of hazards at night in an increasingly hostile environment on the streets.

This video short highlights the dangers faced by people living on Cairo's streets in a country of some 80 million people bursting at the seams.

  • it's so sad that many people have to sleep on the street when many other people lives in palaces and live like a king. :(

our creator gave enough shelters and food for everyone but because of the greedy people not everyone gets their shares.. may Allah open our eyes

  • And why did her parents beat her ? Because she was an accidental birth and unwanted; therefore seen as a drag on their resources. Because she had a strong mind of her own rather than a weak, submissive, obedient , defeatist soul. I know. I am an American who had a similar upbringing. Solution ? Birth control for everyone and tubal ligations for both genders. Less population equals less problems and more love for children who are PLANNED for.

  • AND people have the NERVE to harass the USA?? BS I CRY!! hypocritical much?

  • she's pretty. wait till she matures. then she won't be safe no way no how.

  • and the egyptian police loves to harass and intimidate poor and homeless people .

there is no dignity and no respect whatsoever.

  • It's called village of hope, but alot of people say it is a very corrupted organization. I would advise you to help through the littlest lamb :). Good luck, and never forgot those poor children!

  • The NGO is called Hope Village, (gam3eyet karyet el amal in arabic). :)

  • I wish that foreign adoptions where not so difficult to arrange. My son would like a sisiter or brother.

Was Fatima's baby the result of a rape? Three years on the street and a baby? A woman with a chlld out of wedlock in Egypt would be stigmatized for life. Truly sad.
