Terahertz waves travel in straight lines and pass through objects. This means they're likely to have applications in a variety of fields.
For example, at the site of a fire, terahertz waves can pass through white smoke, which consists mainly of water, and black smoke, which consists mainly of carbon. They can be used to detect information, such as whether there are toxic gases at the site.
To test the use of terahertz waves, the Tabata Group is doing two R&D projects, with the aim of obtaining data at fire scenes.
The Tabata Group will continue with both applied and fundamental research, to make terahertz waves a part of daily life.
