WARNING: Liquid bleach is a HAZARD. It can cause serious skin, eye and fume lung damage, and be fatal if swallowed! READ the warnings on the bottle labels!
WARNING: This cell CAN generate dangerous amounts of
explosive hydrogen gas, it must be vented outdoors and
away from ANY access by all people, children, or pets!
WARNING: This cell can generate significant current, and
when multiplied (or without); this could be a electrocution
hazard!
While this demonstration was short term indoors, it is
capable of varying amounts of voltage/current which does
depend on the amount of magnesium, (any) copper and bleach used. In short, varying the proportions can be
easily done.
All the components can be "used up" or oxidized in varying amounts of time; which is dependent on the choices of such made. The bleach (6% sodium hypochlorite) will be
depleted first, then the magnesium and even the copper
given enough time.
One can series add on cells for higher voltages requirements. One can parallel add on
cells for higher current requirements.
As is; this cell won't light up most incandescent bulbs, they usually require much greater amounts of current. With current limiting resistors, this could very well light up several or many selected appropriate LED's.
Structural magnesium can also obviously be used in
place of the "Firestarter" magnesium used here.
Obviously this a non-viable economic experiment; but it
has potential for a "emergency" battery cell when needed.
This specific cell; seems to easily generate ~ 1/4 ampere
and if bleach (electrolyte) maintained, it could operate ~ 10 days.
Using a super saturated salt, water solution in place of
the bleach will reduce the current roughly by 1/3; but,
it could last much longer. The hydrogen gassing will significantly increase, perhaps by 3 or more times.
