because of the dumbasses on the sidewalks not giving a damn about the frietrucks trying to get out to same someone so some of the firefigthers play guard duty so noone gets ran over

@gitrdone57 The members of every station in the FDNY does that to protect the welfare of the people on the sidewalk and the cars in front of the station so...... I hope that this answers your question on why they did that in your vid.

@fireflymom22 ah we got em never had a problem then again we don't use them much since as a vol. our opener is right next to the door we come in and we just hit it walking in and unless it's winter we don't usually close them when were gone...small town and the PD is right next door no one is stupid enough to just walk in

IDK know you new york guys do it. I almost wish I could do a ride along... JUST ONCE to see the big difference between Rural and City firefighting. that's quite a dream for me.

@freeportkid . As an EMT we had them in the ambulances, but rarely does a fire truck have an automatic door opener because it will interfere with radio frequencies that we use. Low band or High band, it can still cause radio squawking. Even as a Vol. Firefighter we don't use them. It's just easier to make the hydrant "person" jump out and open the door.

@mbc2915 it is to avoid confusion. Often you'll hear, "dispatch, 10 engine." "10 engine, go ahead." "dispatch, 10 engine on scene."
