During the warmer months, the Eaton Canyon Razorback is my home away from home. Where else can you trail run, hike, rock climb, cliff jump & waterfall slide all on your lunch break?
With the holidays, severe storms, and a cruise to Cabo, I hadn't been back to my favorite waterfall in a little over a month. The last time I went was on December 13th and even though the water was freezing, something told me to slide down the Razorback Falls one last time (for 2010, I thought).
As soon as I approached the bridge, I could tell there was a difference, especially after all the heavy rain we received near the end of the year. My two favorite logs, which I always go out of my way to cross, were gone. Then I noticed a couple of landslides and new diverted stream flows. This was when I started to worry, since I was aware that many of the upper waterfalls of Upper Eaton Canyon had been devastated by tons of gravel years ago.
When I arrived at Razorback Falls, all my fears were unfortunately confirmed. All the rain must have pushed tons of rock and debris down stream. What was once a 10-12 foot deep swimming hole, perfect for sliding down the waterfall or jumping from the 50 foot cliff above, was now nothing more than a few feet deep.
My mind is already racing on ideas of how to fix this. As spring and summer approach, if the depth and situation is the same, I want to get a group together to try to haul out all the rock and possibly even use it to make a higher dam and bring this amazing spot back to life!
Get in contact with me if you are interested in helping out.
I would check it again now if it's safe to do so. I hiked up just to the first waterfall last week after the inch an hour downpour and I've never seen so much flooding. Very few could even make it up that short journey (and this was on a saturday afternoon), the streams were waist high and the current was strong.
Sometimes an even bigger storm can wipe out the debris of the first, it's happened before. So don't give up hope.
If not I'd be happy to participate in a clean up effort.
