  • Always cut your mushrooms and leave the base. As with all wild edibles, keep the species going as best as possible. Use a mesh bag to allow the spores to fall back onto the Earth as well.

Something a little off topic: when harvesting fiddleheads, plz plz plz don't clear cut them. Leave some in the grouping to propogate. Just my two cents. Take it for what it's worth ;)

  • @banshee28 When hunting Amanitas for the table, it is imperative to remove the specimen whole, for proper identification. In no way will it harm the mycelium anymore then picking an apple off the tree, will kill the tree. I use wicker / weaved baskets to carry mushrooms. Spores fall thru the same as mesh bags, and the mushrooms stay completely intacked.

  • aren't verpa's also known as and excuse my language...sorry kids..known as "pecker heads" !??! i mean ive eaten these alot. i'm fine.

  • @lamanitareal87 That's what some people call them !!

  • I got poisoned by them once,.. now I know which ones to freezdry! thought they were all morels.

  • @420PATROCK There is a true morel called the Half Free Morel ( Morchella semilibera ) Looks almost like the Verpas. I've never had a problem with Verpas, but I only eat them on occasion, and in small amounts.

  • @grifola I looked this up again, Grifola, and found the same info at MorelManiaDotCom. Don't pull out the whole shroom. You don't ruin the mycelium, but you cut off the food supply to the other shrooms along the path from the host shroom. Won't hurt you next year, but you cut the season short in that growing area.

Also, you showed the 2 best identification techniques in your video: the step and the cap.

By the way, I really enjoyed your video.

  • Ive been hunting for the mushroom in my pants. Its got a long shaft and and large head, can you help me find it??

  • @banchie28 I meant to say "the stem and the cap"

  • @lamanitareal87 actually pecker heads are black morels, verpas are a different species. some people can eat them but not to be confused.

  • @RichardOhKaNoi The mushroom that you are referring to is Gyromitra esculenta, not a Verpa. You should be very careful when posting "facts" especially when it comes to something like mushrooms. And always remember, "When in doubt, throw it out." It's a great motto to keep you healthy.
