There's no spindles through the centres of any cogs. It'd all fall to bits if it were real.

It's just a 3D modeling exercise people. Doesn't matter if it's possible or not.
The main purpose is probably an exercise in usage of the 3D rendering program.

I don't think this is possible since all of the gears have no support so gravity would make it fall apart.
Awesome Moebius Gear animation though! +1

Words cannot describe...

@feralferret yes but the theory behind it is completely solid.
-
@RedgardH I know it's CGI (being a 3D modeller myself), I'm talking about those who say it would work in reality. You would need individual support for each of the cogs, both for retaining their positions and for counteracting gravity.
-
@feralferret it's a CGI! As an engineering stunt and curiosity thing it could be done, I don't see a problem with it. Search for "hubless wheels"
-
@RedgardH Yes, but, nothing is holding these cogs up. They're floating in mid air, unsupported by anything.
-
@feralferret it does not need to have spindles right in the centre. Look at these: /watch?v=K4YmVP6i4qw

Actually, it is not 3D software/rendering exercise. It is mathematical visualization. It is not machine science project neither 3D geek stuff.

It can be GIF. I made it long time ago, but I can remember that it was loop animation so, why not (animated) GIF.
