On January 19 2011, SMRT introduced a Zhong Tong Diesel-Electric Hybrid bus for a one-year trial. It is currently deployed to Service 945 with an expected stint on Service 106.
The bus features a diesel engine and an electric motor with the electric motor providing power propelling the bus to about 20 kph before the diesel engine kicks in.
It is believed that the bus is using an EATON gearbox simillarly featured in SBS Transit's 2 Sunlong Hybrid units.
This bus is expected to cut emissions and fuel consumption by 30 percent says SMRT.
We will take a ride on this bus doing it's rounds on Service 945, a feeder service between Bukit Batok and Bukit Gombak.
Update: 17/7/2011
The bus as of the date of the update is now laid-up. Insider sources say that the bus have it's fare systems and destination displays removed. The fate of the bus is now unknown.
Part of the video was featured in Now You Know! hosted by Don Richmond at clicknetwork.tv.

No matter which service this bus does, it will always appear at Bukit Batok interchange.
