White Mountain is one of 15 peaks in California over 14,000 feet. It also boast a high altitude research lab built by the University of California at about 12,000 ft. The following video clips document our journey to the summit and back, which almost turned into an epic as our car batter froze solid while we were hiking. The trailhead is 22 miles of dirt road and the weather that day was extremely windy, dumping 4-6 inches of snow before we were "rescued" from what would have been a very cold night in the truck...
Here is what www.peakware.com has to say about White Mountain:
White Mountain Peak is located northwest of the town of Bishop in the White Mountain range, home of the ancient bristlecone pine forest. The White Mountains parallel the eastern Sierra Nevada, separated by the Owens Valley.
The trailhead is at 12,000' at a locked gate. The 7-mile trail follows a road to the summit. Two miles up is the Barcroft Facility, a high-altitude research center. The summit is home to the normally unoccupied Summit Laboratory in a small stone structure.
That looks like a neat trek ,cold, but worth it.
How was the view?Could you see much?
And what exactly was/is the research lab used for? Can't find much about it online...
