Had a bulb go out on May 10th 2010 on my Samsung DLP HL50A650. I knew the bulb was bad as there was no picture and the front 3 LED's on the TV were all blinking, indicating a need to replace the bulb. I replaced the bulb on May12th and everything was in working order. on May 29th the TV again indicated that the bulb was bad and needed to be replaced. Thinking there was something else causing the issue I read some posts on line and opened the cover to see what the problem was.
I noticed when I turned on the TV that a piece of circuitry on the ballast board was emitting light and making a small buzzing noise that coincides with the flicker of light from the circuit item. During this same time the bulb tries to light up and then stops when the circutiry piece stops buzzing and emitting light. This happens about 6 times and then the whole TV shuts off, blinking the 3 LED's on the front. I am not sure if this is normal operation and the bulb is just bador an indication that there is an issue with the ballast.
Any thoughts?
Is there any way to visually tell if the bulb is faulty? If not, is there a way to test the bulb?

@modelbri where are you ? I can fix it with new color wheel. Unless you are technically inclined person, you should not try to replace the color wheel? The bussing noise is caused by color wheel losing lubrication, however you cannot lub it again.. just replace it. 213 880 1795 A+TV Home Service....

This video is about as useful as sticking my finger into my eye? What the hell are we supposed to be seeing? How about a little narration. My TV is a HL50A650 as well and I'm beginning to think they are all defective. Now I'm hearing from SAMSUNG that I may need to replace the ballast which controls the power for an additional $90.16 w/S&H. Nice little racket.

Same thing with my tv. We purchased a new bulb for $100, nonrefundable, and the tv still makes the buzzing noise without a picture. I found a ballast for under $70 online but not sure if that is the problem. How easy is it to replace yourself before I purchase it?

Mine does the same exact thing, the ballast makes a loud buzzing noise when starting and blinks like that. I heard these models of tv's (HL50A650) have a very common balast malfunction issue. I am not spendin $100 for a bulb when I dont know what it could be.

I have a 72' samsung that's doing the same thing. I replaced the lamp about 3 month ago and it's doing it again. The tv is only two years old. The people whom I bought the warranty stiff everyone out of their money and closed or went out of business without saying a word
