SALON - Kate Culkin on 19th Century Sculptor Harriet Hosmer
Friday 10/22, 5-7pm
Bronx Community College Assistant Professor of History Kate Culkin on "A Yankee Girl Can Do Any Thing She Pleases: Harriet Hosmer as a Woman of Her Time" and her new book, Harriet Hosmer: A Cultural Biography. In the 19th century, Harriet Hosmer (1830-1908) was a celebrated sculptor credited with opening the field to women, and used as proof of female ability and American refinement. Her patrons included those who hoped to prove the U.S.A. equal to Europe in terms of art and refinement, and women's rights advocates, who saw Hosmer's accomplishments as not a miracle, but evidence of what Americans and women could do with proper training. This unlikely coalition, plus her talent, ambition, and cultivation of her public profile, forged her reputation as an artist. Hosmer was not so much a woman ahead of her time as one whose biography opens a window onto her time - join us for a look through that window! Books available for sale and signing.
For Athenaeum members and their guests.
