Australia lags behind the rest of the world when it comes to the coverage of high-resolution satellite imagery displayed on Google Earth and Google Maps. While many cities in the UK, US and other parts of the world enjoy sub-metre resolution, the only place in Australia that got such high-class imagery (as of 2007) was a small area in Sydney's city centre. Not even the national capital got anything more than the DigitalGlobe imagery which offers good (1-metre) imagery but not the really high class stuff I have just mentioned. This news item was shown on Seven News on 28/2/2007.
Update, September 2008: Canberra and the other capital cities finally got the hi-res imagery that has been enjoyed in the US and the UK for years.
