A few blocks from the ocean, The Rachel Carson High School for Coastal Studies offers students the chance to study marine biology at the school and to take excursions to the New York Aquarium. "I got to have a behind the scenes look at the aquarium and go into the ocean with waders and do things like hold starfish," a student said.

Opened in 2005, the school offers close relationships between students and faculty and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. There are well-attended Saturday study sessions.

A variety of academic classes are offered, from traditional, Regents focused teaching to courses like sociological research at Kingsborough Community College. Students have the same teachers for math and for history for their first two years, smoothing their transition from middle school and allowing them to build stronger bonds.

Housed within MS 303, Rachel Carson has cluttered classrooms and an active student body. The academic classes we saw were mostly focused, but in a gym class kids seemed to be milling around with nothing to do. A few played basketball, but others sat on the floor chatting with one another. The principal was on leave at the time of our visit. Assistant Principal Abraham Furleiter, in charge during the principal's absence, seemed to have a good relationship with the most of the students: he called them by name and joked easily with them. "For me, academics are the first priority," he said. "I know what kids need in real life."

Though there are no sports at Rachel Carson, students may participate on teams at the nearby William E. Grady High School. The school is part of an attendance improvement and dropout prevention pilot project through The United Way. Attendance, which hovers around 84%, is lower than the citywide average for high schools.
