The man you are watching (called amongst other things a 'savage' by a Florida judge in '56) released over 700 songs in the 21 years he performed. Ironically, he received 3 Grammy's not for his trade mark songs, but for gospel songs. He was a normal man except for his passion, creativity, charisma, endurance, motivation. Even at the peak of his career, he never changed his religious beliefs, (wearing a cross, David star, Jewish Chia necklaces while performing humorously saying "I don't want to miss out on heaven due to a technicality.") The man you are watching disliked being called 'The King' saying "Jesus Christ is The King. I'm just and entertainer." In the '50's when he used to perform, the National Guard used to assist the police in maintaining crowd control. He declined to run for the presidency, though a distant relative of Lincoln and Carter, because he was an entertainer. From being legally forbidden in '56 to dance while signing he wagged his finger, tolerated being forced to sing Hound Dog on the Steve Allen show to a basset hound, In '73, he performed live the 1st live satellite broadcast ever. Earth's population was 3.9 billion. It was watched by ONE BILLON people. In '92 the U.S. postal service issued a commemorative stamp of hIs '62 hit 'Return to Sender.' People deliberately mailed erroneous addressed letters to have them returned stamped "return to sender." He was devoted to his mother. He was devoted to his fan's giving a genuine aura of a one on one feeling while entertaining to thousands. Generous to a fault giving hundreds of thousands of $'s to his fan's and strangers in unanticipated ways be it Cadillacs, rings etc.
In '68 Elvis invented the concept that today is called in the musical field 'Unplugged,' in the '68 Comeback Special.
Critic Dave Marsh assessing the musical and cultural impact of Elvis's recordings said that "these records, more than any others, contain the seeds of what rock & roll was, has been and most likely what it may foreseeably become."
Befittingly, his last song performed live was, "Can't Help Falling in Love with You." I believe his fans were his genuine love. One fan, in hearing 'It's Now or Never" from within his jail cell for stealing tires vowed to pursue the same field. Thus was born the musician Barry White.
John Lennon flew to Graceland to meet the man you are watching and said of him this: "Before Elvis, there was nothing."
To Tomv87, who termed Elvis as "overrated," kindly show me his equivalent. SHOW ME ANYBODY WHO CAN COMMAND AN AUDIENCE OF 2 BILLION.
ELVIS PRESLEY - A Legacy that should not be underestimated and an artist that the industry has yet to acknowledge in full as an entertainer for his songs and deeds.
ELVIS PRESLEY - A LEGENDARY LEGACY.
