  • thank God Fischer survived

  • Collpases??? Dude at the least sound it out if you won't google it.

  • @meds613 Also, there as an AED right near the bench. The NHL changed some rules after this to mandate AEDs in every arena and for team physicians to be very close to the bench.

That may be why Fischer survived, but Alexei Cherepanov did not.

  • That's so crazy! Glad he's alive! Just think how his family was feeling at this point!!

  • Its called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, which is a problem with a contractile protein in the heart. It is the most common cause for sudden death in young athletes.

Its a problem with the heart when it contracts so much, that it doesn't fill properly. So the heart does not dilate and one part of the heart (left ventricle) is hypertrophic, meaning it is contracting stronger than normally.

The heart beat Babcock was saying leads to death is called Atrial Fibrillation. He is very lucky.

  • only way he survived (glad he did, obviously) is because he is in the NHL. They have some of the best doctors on hand, ready to act immediately. If this happens at your local rink, or any incident like the one on Zednik, you're dead.

  • a seizure is one of the most painfull things ever i felt like evry muscle in my body was going into overdrive, i came 3 inches from landing head first on my set of weights

  • trixster is right.... but when flow to the brain is interupted it can trigger the uncontrolled electrical activity.

  • Yes. Depending on how severe the seizure is. For example a prolonged loss of consciousness could be potentially life threatening.

  • No, a seizure is when there is uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain.

  • no a pulseless arrest

  • deffo and I second that Go Wings! :-D

  • I was thinking that

  • wtf are you talking about?

  • Actually a seizure is when the flow of oxygen to your brain is interrupted, so it was only cardiac arrest.

  • It wasn't a seizure, they originally thought it was. He actually went into cardiac arrest.

  • wow ur balls havent dropped yet have they?

  • It doesn't mean your heart stops every time. Medical attention is indeed needed though. When I was still a child my mom had a seizure at home and it's pretty scary but it was nothing serious.

  • uh yeah your heart stops prety life threatnening

  • If this ocurred at home, he wouldnt be with us right now.

It was a very good thing it happend at the rink, where the medical staff was right there.

  • is a seizure life threatening?

  • fuckin' freak
