I need your help with a sound project I am doing. The project is based on voicemail, and is a response to the difficult and hard-to-place question "What is your place in the world?".
The idea of having on voicemail is that this is both a useful contemporary means of communication, and also a barrier between people. A voicemail is private, but at the same time, any person has access to it, and there is a confusing area between personal, intimate material, and what is accessible to other people.
To answer the question, you would need to only make a telephone call, and leave a message. Messages should be under a minute or so. You will hear three "chimes" (made from half-filled water glasses in my family's kitchen) and my sister and I asking you in unison "What's your place in the world?". You can then say your name, the way you would in a regular telephone message. If you want / feel comfortable, you can give a bit of information about yourself the way you would in a regular phone call as well.
For example: "Hi Lauren, this is ________, I'm calling you from Toronto. I've been wondering what my place in the world is...."
or "This message is for Lauren. Since 2004, I think my place in the world has been to.....because that is when (such and such) occurred."
or "Hi, it's me. My place in the world is to be an expert pancake flipper: I wish that it was a great lover of men, but that is just my lot in life".
Please be very honest!
**********
I realize that the question itself is problematic, which is sort of the point.
How do I answer? : Good question! If you can't think of what to say, maybe consider what is important to you, and what you would like to have happen in your life. This does not imply a cheesy answer like "to find world peace", or "to love and be loved". That said, if your answer really is to love and be loved, or to find world peace, then please say this!
A useful trick might be to be as honest as possible. For example, as it was pointed out to me, last week my place in the world was guarding a house and growing fruit flies. Now it is manning an ephemeral telephone service and avoiding flipping over the handlbars of my bike. There are other, bigger things too, but sometimes you can imply the big things in the small, most honest details.
I would like anyone participating to feel very comfortable, so please e-mail if you have any questions. I would really appreciate the participation very much.
To call: 416-826-4570. I will be taking the calls until the end of September, 2006. I have a capacity of 25 voicemail messages, so if the mailbox is full, please be persistent. Call at any time of the day or night until this date.
Thank you tremendously for your help and phone calls; I hope the request is painless. I appreciate it so much.
*also, if you know of anyone, especially someone who is older or elderly who might be able to participate, I would love that more than anything. The idea is a bit weird and might take some explaining, but I would be more than willing to do the explaining myself if the idea seems daunting to you.
This question is about the world and where do you place in the world i answered your question.

i am not for the world or the things of this world. You should be asking is there A God and would he say he is for the world? Thee God in the bible says he is not for the world.Hate what God hates and love What God loves love thy neighbor as thy love thy self. The angels would tell you from heaven yes there is THEE God and this is not the path he wants you to follow as far as the world goes.

What is your place in the world??, I think that a better question will be: What is my purpose in this world? Not an easy question, and for some, it takes a lifetime to figure out.
