For many decades the Detroit Boat Club was one of the finest clubs in the Detroit Area, if not the midwest. At some point (late 1980's or early 1990's?) the city took the property (I am not sure why - taxes?).
The rowing club, which has had its shells and equipment in the basement, now are the sole occupants of a rapidly deteriotating building. I met the building manager - he is Detroit Parks and Rec employee, and we spoke briefly about the amount of work needed to restore the building! He said it is estimated that the roof alone needs $500,000 worth of work.
I don't think the city will ever have the money or a good use for this building. If only there were some way the DBC rowing could buy the building and afford to restore it.
Impossible? Wyandotte Boat Club fell into a pile of money due to BASF superfund cleanup, and they have an outstanding new facility!
I am really glad that the rowing club is still around.
