Nearly every Sunday at 6 am, a massive flea market is erected in Trastevere. The market extends southwest for about a kilometer and a half from the 365-year old Porta Portese gate; thousands of tents and tables line Via Portuense, branching off along the wider side streets perpendicular to the Tiber River.

You can bargain for nearly everything you can think of at the Porta Portese market - antiques, furniture, books, shoes, vintage (and not-so-vintage) clothing, electronics, household items - there's even a section devoted to kitchen sinks. A salesman taking orders for passenger pigeons wanders through the tight crowds with his demonstration perched on his shoulder. The capital city's immigrant population is represented among the Sunday vendors; they range from Romans speaking dialect to Eastern European, to African, Middle Eastern, Asian, Latin American...and many Roma Gypsies. The street vendors begin to pack up their wares at 1 pm, and the entire street is returned to automobiles by the stroke of two.

Walking along the far end of the market near the book sellers, my friend and I were lucky to catch a rare street performance. Can anyone recognize this song?

  • I was only able to understand that it's spanish.

"Dolor nel mio cor" seems to be "the pain inside my heart". Very lively perfomance, i like it.
