"Corn is about 10% protein, the protein quality is relatively poor. Corn contains about double the energy that an equal volume of oats contains. When people substituted corn for oats at an equal volume, their horses sweat more and /or get fat. To eliminate the problem, corn needs to be fed at only half the volume or less than the volume of oats. If you feed too much corn, resulting in overweight horses, and then work them hard, the added stress on the hock joint can cause bogs."

@HorseDiva20 Once again, corn lacks essential nutrients and should never be fed alone. Colicing is not caused by feed type alone, either. I've personally never seen a horse colic solely because of what they were being fed. Generally there are other factors that play in to it like not being cooled down or being fed too much of a new feed too quickly. Working a horse is not the same as letting them relax in good turnout, and daily work can cause stress issues if the horses aren't allowed to relax.

@intuzuglen That isn't good turnout. Good turnout has grass and gives the horses a chance to relax and be horses. Letting them run around in an arena is not the same as letting a horse act natural in a pasture or paddock. I wouldn't want my horse living with that sort of routine.

@MagnoliaDreaming The students put the horses into arenas for turnout ever morning.

@HorseDiva20 my horse is out on pasture all day long, is fed a mix of oats, pellets and carrots that i mix myself, he seems to be doing great on that as of right now and from what i have found with him is he does not transition easily to new things like being in a stall all the time so i am going to transition him in the summer time to being in a stall and i am not saying meredith manor is not a good place to be im just saying that my horse may need different things and i really love the program

our horses are very healthy on the corn diet and we have had very few colics compared to feeding pelleted feed. maybe 2 in the past year and very minor cases. we turn out in the arenas every morning and the horses love it. the get worked everyday and are in very good shape.

@intuzuglen Multiple people that attend M. Manor or have visited have commented on this video saying that they don't.
The website also shows no turnout on the map. There are no pastures, paddocks, etc.

@HorseDiva20 Corn is definitely not one of the best things you can feed. Wow, does Meredith Manor really keep its students that ignorant to proper nutrition? Corn provides cheap energy but is not nutritionally sound at all. It lacks many nutrients that horses need. It is also a very starchy vegetable with a high glycemic index, which messes with insulin levels in the horses' bodies. It should never be fed straight. Pelleted feeds are a much better option since they are nutritionally balanced.
