Digital Analysis of Music as a Cultural Artifact - Armand Leroi discusses current efforts to catalog and
analyze traditional music. Leroi builds upon to previous work of an
ethnomusicologist named Alan Lomax, and uses digital technology to
analyze music as a cultural artifact. He discusses the eleven
cantographic clusters of music and how cantographic data relates to
evolutionary biology.

  • I've seen him staring at the bikes at uni for no apparent reason before, quite an odd man.

  • Scientific inquiry doesn't stifle creativity at all. If anything it humbles and inspires us when we can understand what monumental achievements can be made with the most exquisite of processes. The successful persuit of knowledge is at the root of all scientific endevour and if this does not inspire you than nothing will.

  • Oh, I get it. So a machine listens to different types of music to tell us what those forms are about! No wonder Mr. Leroi says that many of the songs are the same around the world - because not only is he not examining different cultural forms, but he isn't listening to the recordings either.

  • I do admit that he is quite eccentric.

  • Just look at him, twiddling, twaddling, mad proffing, & generally struggling with his umbrella. If you're asking me about cantometrics and evolutionary biology, that requires a long answer and I'm on way to work. No time.

  • Why do you think this?

  • This guy is as daft as a brush.

  • By doing this work you may affect the environment of musicians creating music. Does Armand Leroi have a game plan to ensure the affects are beneficial?

I like to think music creativity is open ended, spontaneous and free requiring a degree of chaos. Scientific number crunching a rather different topic and the two might not mix too well.

  • I want an explanation of the evolution of baldness Leroi. I mean what;s the point ?

  • So intelligent and sexy as always Prof Leroi. This new investigation seems fascinating. I hope to read the results in a few years to see the results of it.
